MEMPHIS – Innova, a pre-seed, seed and early stage investor focused on starting and funding high-growth companies in the Biosciences, Technology and AgBio fields across the state of Tennessee, announced today it has made the first venture-funding investment as part of the Tennessee Small Business Company Investment Credit Act (TNInvestco). Innova has chosen to invest in Knoxville-based TrakLok Corporation.

NASHVILLE, — White Pine School in Jefferson County will host a Clean Energy Day on Friday, March 12 as part of the National Energy Education Development Project to educate attendees about alternative clean energy sources including wind, solar and hydropower. NEED is a nationwide program that teaches the science of energy and provides information to teachers and students about conventional and emerging energy sources.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee has again been ranked among the top states in the nation in Site Selection magazine’s annual Governor’s Cup rankings for its economic development performance in 2009. The economic development publication put the Volunteer State at No. 5, the highest ranking of any Southeastern state. The Governor’s Cup award recognizes states with the most new or expanded private-sector capital projects as tracked by publisher Conway Data Inc.’s New Plant Database. The magazine gave its top ranking to the state of Ohio, followed by Texas, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

10 Communities Chosen for New Downtown Revitalization Program

NASHVILLE – Commissioner Matt Kisber of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development today announced that 10 communities have been selected to participate in Tennessee Downtowns, a community improvement program for cities and counties seeking to revitalize traditional commercial districts.
 
The selected communities are: Celina, Erwin, Jefferson City, Martin, Milan, Mt. Pleasant, Monterey, Paris, Selmer and Sweetwater.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Economic and Community Development Matt Kisber and Commissioner of Revenue Reagan Farr today released a joint statement in the wake of Davidson County Chancellor Russell Perkins ruling the case of Coleman v. Kisber and Farr. The Chancellor ruled that TNInvestco documents sought as part of an open records filing could be withheld under Tennessee Code Annotated 4-3-730 (c) for a period of five years.

SPARTA, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber, Sparta Mayor Tommy Pedigo and White County Executive Herd Sullivan, along with leadership from the Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce, today took part in ribbon-cutting ceremonies celebrating the grand opening of Norcom of Tennessee’s expanded production facility in Sparta, Tenn. The expansion represents an investment of $2 million over three years and is expected to create 30 to 50 new jobs.

ClearFuels, Hughes Hardwood to Develop Wood Product Biorefinery

Hawaii and Tennessee Companies Join Forces to Convert Wood Products to Renewable Diesel and Jet Fuel
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber, along with officials of ClearFuels Technology Inc. and Hughes Hardwood, announced today that the two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a biorefinery that will convert 1,000 dry tons of wood product per day to renewable diesel or jet fuel. Hawaii-based ClearFuels will site the facility at the Hughes Hardwood wood component products manufacturing facility in Collinwood, Tenn.

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Energy Policy Office, in partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Tennessee Department of Education, announced today a call for entries in an energy art competition for Tennessee second and seventh graders. The “Think Clean, Think Green, It’s in the Bag!” contest invites students to create and submit a design to be printed on a reusable shopping bag and a written paragraph explaining the meaning of their design.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber today joined with executives of SL America to announce a $35 million expansion of SL Tennessee, LLC, a company subsidiary operating in Clinton, Tenn.. The expansion will create 300 new jobs and add an additional 100,000 square feet to the company’s existing facility by the end of 2010. SL Tennessee is an automotive parts supplier for General Motors, Hyundai, KMG and Volkswagen.
