CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Work continues to progress on the stabilization and clearing of the rockslide along U.S. 64 at Mile Marker 17 in Polk County with around the clock work set to begin Tuesday. Construction crews continued scaling loose rock and debris from the eastern side of the slope with machinery today as heavy equipment worked along the roadway and river bank breaking up large rock and hauling away debris from the site.  Rock bolting crews worked through the evening and early morning hours drilling 15 ft., 25 ft. and 40 ft. deep holes along the upper and middle sections of the central part of the slope in order to grout and install rock bolts.  Daytime and night time crews will continue working a 24/7 schedule, weather permitting, until the slide remediation and cleanup is completed.
 

Evaluations continue for rockslide on U.S. 129/SR-115

 
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- Both lanes on U.S. 129/SR-115 remain closed at the scene of a rockslide approximately two miles south of the Chilhowee Dam and more than 13 miles north of the  Tennessee and North Carolina state line.
 
TDOT geotechnical engineers have conducted preliminary evaluations of the slide and are currently developing a plan to stabilize the mountainside and re-open the road safely and expeditiously.   No timeline has been confirmed.
 
Meanwhile, motorists can take temporary detours around the rockslide area.

Debris Removal and Rock Bolting Operations Continue

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Over the weekend, daytime construction crews continued hauling slide debris from the site and reconstructed the 275 ton crawler crane approximately 30’ to the east so that hand and mechanical scaling could continue on the eastern face of the slope.  The contractor resumed scaling today and will continue until the slope is free of loose rock and debris that might otherwise serve as a hazard to workers and future traffic on the roadway surface below.

24 Hour Schedule Continues
 
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Crews continued working a 24 hour schedule with hand and mechanical scaling, drilling, and blasting proceeding on the eastern side of the main slide area and along the river bank during daylight hours and rock bolting operations taking place on the western slope during night time hours.  This schedule is expected to continue through the weekend and into next week as weather permits.  Night time rock bolting operations are expected to shift to a 24 hour, 7 day a week schedule as soon as the slope blasting and scaling operations are completed.
 

U.S. 25/70 in Cocke County to Close for Bridge Inspection

Knoxville, Tenn. – Motorists using U.S. 25/70 (State Route 9) will need to take an alternate route Wednesday, March 17 when TDOT bridge inspectors close the bridge over the French Broad River in Newport to perform a routine bridge inspection.
 
U.S. 25/70 (State Route 9 or East Broadway) in Newport will be closed from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on March 17. Motorists will be detoured onto U.S. 321 and State Route 340.

*       Thursday March 11 through Monday March 15, The right turn lane on Urbandale Avenue to go north on Briley Parkway will be closed for bridge work.
*       Friday March 12, 12 Noon through Sunday March 14, 7PM, The I-40 westbound on ramp at 46th Ave. will be closed for beam storage.
*       Saturday March 13,6AM through Sunday March 14,7PM, Urbandale Avenue will be closed from Briley Parkway to Morrow Road. Local traffic only will be allowed.
*       Saturday March 13, 6AM-7PM, The middle lane on Robertson Rd. will be closed for bridge work.

REGIONWIDE, installation of longitudinal cable barrier rail at various locations on various interstate and state routes: The contractor will have daytime left lane and shoulder closures on Sunday through Friday at several sites along the following state routes: Hamilton County on SR-29 and SR-111; Sequatchie County on SR-111. Estimated completion date is May 2010. 
 
BRADLEY COUNTY, installation of an Intelligent Transportation System in the city of Cleveland: The contractor will have daytime lane and shoulder closures between the hours of 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM on various local routes to install components of intelligent transportation system. Estimated completion date is March 2010.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will close two ramps located along Interstate 440 in Nashville this weekend as a major concrete rehabilitation project continues. The closures are as follows:
 
Ramp from I-440 Westbound to Hillsboro Road (Ramp to 21st Avenue will remain open)
Ramp from I-440 Eastbound to Murphy Road
 
The ramps will close beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010 and will reopen no later than 6:00 a.m. Monday, March 15, 2010.
